Under Construction

The knowledge base of TABI is currently under development under the lead of outcome 5 of TABI (Knowledge and Information Sharing System, KISS).

The management of agrobiodiversity requires multidimensional information and knowledge in order to contribute to sustainable development. Ecological, economic, institutional and socio-cultural knowledge is needed. There is a wealth of such information and knowledge in Lao PDR. However, this information is not easy accessible either it is scattered in different government organization, research institutes, etc or it traditional, indigenous knowledge and is only shared locally. Moreover, TABI will generate a lot of new data, information and knowledge over the years.
It is a main goal of KISS and the entire TABI to collect all this information and metadata of the districts and provinces where TABI is active in order to provide comprehensive baseline information for up-to-date planning and implementation is developed which will be of use beyond TABI program. In this context, KISS is to provide an infrastructure where all this information is brought together and ordered and stored in a way that allows the thematic linkage of the information and an easy retrieval of sought after knowledge for planning and implementation activities. This infrastructure consists of the knowledge and information databases (KID), the technical infrastructure, and its content. The content is continuously developed and updated by capturing relevant and new information and knowledge generated by TABI and its partners.
KID compromises different elements: Information on experts and institutions, documents, and statistical and spatial data and information. In the following the significance of these components for TABI are described in more detail. KID is anchored in CAFRI and linked to the Lao Agriculture Database (LAD). KID is complementary to other information resources in the field of land use and agriculture in Lao PDR such as LaoFAB, Lao44, Right-links or NICE.

Draft elements of the  Knowledge and Information Databases (KID) and their function within KISS, and the knowledge base

What

Function within Knowledge Base and the entire KISS

Expert and institution database: Information about individual experts and institutions.

Stakeholders and their knowledge are key assets. It is important that not only the key actors of TABI are part of the database but a broad range of stakeholders and experts in Lao PDR, especially also from private sector. The roster enables the identification of specialists as a first step in building a knowledge community and enables the networking of them.

Document repository: Documents generated in the frame of TABI activities as well as existing documents of significance to ABD in different format (text, statistical data, video/DVD, audio, etc).

Documents represent an important form of explicit knowledge. A documentation covering the multidimensional knowledge requirements of agrobiodiversity management substantially ease the planning and implementation enables to capitalize on existing knowledge.

GIS- and meta-databases on statistics: Maps on land use, on natural resources, socio-economic situation, e.g. poverty etc. and references to available (mainly national) spatial data

For planning, implementation and monitoring up-to-date spatial information on and statistical data of the area of intervention is essential.

Currently, this information is scattered in the different ministries of Lao and in GoL offices at province and district level. An overview of where to find adequate data is lacking.

Internal document repository : contains program internal documents

A central documentation of all internal documents contributes to information exchange among TABI CU, KISS team and keeps them up-to-date. It serves as an institutional memory.

Knowledge Manager links information of the different databases with the TABI knowledge classification system and adds geographical attributes to the information.

TheKnowledge Manager enables the linking of all available information and knowledge with regard to a specific issue or context. In doing so, all different perspectives can be taken into consideration and a comprehensive overview on available information and knowledge is provided as well as knowledge and information gaps can be identified.

Online interface:

The online user interface provides open access to all information (except the internal document repository) of KID.

It enables the decentralized update of the databases by the different stakeholders and actors. This enables to convey responsibility for the common knowledge base to the stakeholders and enhance their commitment for it.
