The approach to the overall goal of TABI to maintain and protect Lao PDR’s biodiversity as a key to poverty alleviation the Program includes five Technical Outcomes:
Outcome 1: Improved capacity for the effective governance of the International Convention on Biological diversity (CBD) in Lao PDR.
This Outcome will assist the CBD National Committee to better manage the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and improve CBD reporting. Support will include stronger coordination and networking, capacity building, establishing appropriate monitoring indicators and the provision of relevant and timely information through TABI’s Knowledge and Information Sharing System.
Outcome 2: Sustainable agricultural systems which improve upland livelihoods and conserve biodiversity
This Outcome will promote the adoption of sustainable farming systems to improve livelihoods and conserve agrobiodiversity. This will be achieved by relevant research and extension programs to develop and disseminate diversified and sustainable production systems for crops, livestock, fish and NTFPs
Outcome 3: Improved marketing and sustainable management of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and agricultural products
This outcome will engage farmers in the management of forest resources and support the sustainable production, harvesting and marketing of NTFPs and farm products. It will use AEDP methods to promote closely-linked value chains that not only stimulate demand, but also communicate product volume and quality messages through shorter market chain links.
Outcome 4: Support for land use planning, land resource use rights and land management method development
Reliable land use planning, allocation and tenure are essential prerequisites to the sustainable use of agrobiodiversity resources. Outcome 4 will provide support to ongoing activities of the National Land Management Authority and NAFES to develop fair and transparent land use planning systems to encourage villagers to become partners in the sustainable use and management of agrobiodiversity resource
Outcome 5: Knowledge and information management for agrobiodiversity conservation and poverty reduction
Under this Outcome, the knowledge, information and impact monitoring indicators necessary to develop sustainable approaches to pro-poor natural resource management will be captured, capitalised on and used to shape a policy framework appropriate for agrobiodiversity management in Lao PDR. The KISS will disseminate knowledge to stakeholders at all levels and systematically evaluate progress on biodiversity conservation on an on-going basis.
