Aquatic resources

Aquatic resources

The highly diverse aquatic ecosystems of Laos provide a vital natural resource for local people. Village food and income often depends highly on the harvesting or collecting of naturally occurring species such as fish, shrimp, shell fish and algae. At a time when increasing pressures impact on the sustainability of these natural resources, TABI is working with a large number of villages on a range of improved management systems. These include production of fish and shrimp in rice paddies in the rice off season, as well as working with villages to establish conservation zones in streams and rivers to allow natural populations to thrive.

Expected Impacts of the Subprojects:

On Agro-Biodiversity

  • Fish conservation areas and improved aquatic resource management lead to both improved catches for villages, and increased biodiversity
  • Raising fish in paddies requires the reduction/elimination of pesticide use – leading to increased overall biodiversity (frogs, fish, mussels etc)
  • Linking river weed supply and production with water quality ensures water quality is considered in catchment management decisions.

On Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction

  • Providing conservation areas for fish and shrimp to thrive ensures enough reproduction to ensure the future of the local fishery – a vital source of food and income
  • Raising fish in rice paddies outside of cropping season provides additional and diversified income for villagers, while providing more income per unit of land.
  • By coordinating the production of crispy river weed in a local management group, villagers, most women, were able to produce a higher quality product and sell it for a higher price.
