Indigenous rice varieties

Indigenous rice varieties

Laos is home to some of the world’s richest diversity of native rice varieties. To help preserve and promote this diversity, TABI is facilitating  the purification and improvement of native rice varieties in all three target  provinces, in both lowland wet rice and upland dry rice agro-ecosystems.

Expected Impacts of the Subprojects:

On Agro-Biodiversity

  • Securing production and conservation of a local rice variety
  • Increasing agro-biodiversity in wet paddy rice systems.
  • Reduced use and reliance  on pesticides and herbicides

 On Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction

  • Reduced chemical inputs reduces the cost of producing local rice varieties
  • Better rice yields due to improved rice seed selection
  • Potential higher demand and selling price for organically grown, local varieties of rice
  • Improved food security and income through diverse paddy fauna - fish, frogs and crabs return to paddies using organic production methods.
