NTFPs, local herbal medicine & agroforestry

NTFPs, local herbal medicine & agroforestry

Villagers in rural areas have always relied heavily on Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) both as a source of income and as a secure source of food in difficult times. As increasing pressure threatens the abundance of many traditional NTFPs, it is vital to investigate new ways to use these resources so they can continue to remain a sustainable natural resource. TABI is working with villages across three provinces of Northern Laos to improve the management – and domestication where  appropriate - of native species such as rattan, bamboo, wild gingers (galangal), mushrooms, a wide range of medicinal plants, and various other species/products.

Expected Impacts of the Subprojects:

On Agro-Biodiversity

  • Combining crops such as coffee and chestnut provides diversified incomes and a more complex land use likely to support more diverse ecological communities
  • Growing shade tolerant crops such as Rattan and Galangal Ginger under tree crops promotes a healthy understory that supports a more diverse biota and protects the soil
  • Intensifying the production of NTFPs such as rattan and orchids in household gardens and under tree crops reduces over harvesting pressure on these species in the forest.

On Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction

  • Improved agroforestry techniques provide higher quality produce and better prices for participating households
  • Combining crops provides diverse income streams and increases resilience against crop damage or fluctuating crop prices.
  • Techniques for intensifying the production of high value NTFPs in the village provides alternative incomes
  • Training and promotion of bamboo shoot processing increases the amount of bamboo shoot available for consumption and sale, while also leading to the valuing of the villages’ bamboo forest areas.
