Organic vegetables, fruits, crops, systems

Organic vegetables, fruits, crops, systems

TABI works with farmers in a number of districts promoting organic methods of vegetable production. Demand for organic produce is increasing in Laos and abroad and sustainable approaches to vegetable growing can reduce impacts on agro-biodiversity, while allowing farmers to demand a higher price for their vegetables.

Expected Impacts of the Subprojects:

On Agro-Biodiversity

  • Reducing the impacts of over fertilization and pesticide use through the promotion of more environmentally sound production methods
  • Maintaining soil organic matter leads to reduced soil loss and increased soil biota
  • Reduced pollution of waterways by fertilizers and pesticides that can harm fish
  • Higher diversity of vegetable friendly species in the gardens – frogs, earthworms and snakes.

On Livelihood and Poverty Reduction

  • Increased production and quality of vegetables – leading to higher incomes
  • Control of pest species through less environmentally harmful methods (for example, pest repelling companion plants and the support of pest predators)
  • Reduced input costs (fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides) - saving farmers money
  • Supporting the sustainability of local organic markets by increasing supply
  • The development of common seed funds provides high quality seeds for members of the production groups.
